Community guidelines

How we show up for each other here.

Sober Woke is an information hub with a real, peer community around it, not a clinical support service. That distinction matters, and this page explains exactly what it means in practice, including what happens if you or someone else is in real crisis.

If you're in crisis right now

Please don't wait for a reply here. The team reads submissions when we can, not instantly, and this is not a monitored crisis line.

0800 12 13 14 SADAG 24-hour Substance Abuse Helpline — free, confidential

0800 567 567 SADAG 24-hour Suicide Crisis Helpline

If you or someone else is in immediate physical danger, please call 10111 (police) or 112 (from any cell phone) right now, or go to your nearest emergency room. That's not something a website, including this one, should ever be the first response to.

What this space is for

Talk. Learn. Show up. That's the whole idea, real conversation between people who get it, honest information, and real-world connection, not performing sobriety for likes. You don't need to call yourself an alcoholic to belong here. Sober, sober-curious, trying to drink less, questioning it, supporting someone who drinks, you're welcome.

Welcome here

  • Real stories, in your own words, including the messy parts
  • Honest questions, even ones you feel embarrassed to ask
  • Supporting someone else without judging them
  • Talking about relapse without shame
  • Disagreeing respectfully

Not welcome here

  • Shaming anyone for drinking, relapsing, or asking a question
  • Diagnosing or giving medical advice to someone else
  • Promoting alcohol brands or products
  • Spam, scams, or unrelated self-promotion
  • Harassment, hate speech, or targeting any individual

Who moderates, and how

The team reviews what's submitted through Feedback and Share Your Story before anything is published anywhere. Nothing goes live automatically. If something crosses a line above, it's removed, and if it involves a real safety concern, we'll try to point that person toward the numbers above directly.

Real conversation happens on small-group Zoom calls, hosted by Thando, twice a month, live, not left running unmoderated. Thando is present for the whole call, which is exactly why it works, these guidelines get held to in real time, not reviewed after the fact.

What Sober Woke is not

This is not therapy, a medical service, or a crisis line. Nobody on this team is a doctor, counsellor, or addiction specialist, and nothing here replaces one. Sober Woke shares personal experience and evidence-based information side by side, clearly labelled as which is which, but the responsibility for professional care always sits with a real, qualified person, not a website.
