A South African awakening

Welcome to Sober Woke. You arrived exactly where you needed to be.

For years, alcohol got sold to us as harmless, even glamorous. It isn't either. This is the place that tells you what it actually does.

Sober Woke is a community for anyone building a life without alcohol, sober, sober-curious, or just tired of waking up foggy. No judgment. No relapse shame. Just people who get it.

What happens here

Three things, done properly.

Talk.

A community that isn't performing sobriety for likes — real conversation, milestones, and people who actually show up for each other.

Learn.

A library of the podcasts, books and science that actually help — plus honest answers to the questions nobody explains, like why you're still having drinking dreams.

Show up.

Sober runs, mocktail nights, paint-and-sip evenings — real life, together, without the bottle in the room.

Who's behind this

Thandokazi Ntshinga

About our founder, Thandokazi Ntshinga.

For twelve years, drinking was part of Thando's life — it started as curiosity, and slowly turned into binge drinking. She tried to quit more than once over the years, and each time, it didn't stick.

It came down to a choice: keep compromising her mental health for a few hours of forgetting, or actually be happy. The truth is, she wasn't even happy when she was drinking — she'd overthink, look back at her own life, and all she could do was cry, because she wasn't where she wanted to be. But she could see clearly what was standing in her way.

On 28 December 2024, she removed it. Everything changed.

She built Sober Woke because the 43,000 people who found her along the way kept asking for the same thing — somewhere to keep showing up for each other, built to last longer than a Facebook algorithm.

The numbers

This isn't a small problem.

5th highest alcohol consumption rate in the world SABC News, citing WHO data ↗
62,000 premature deaths a year linked to alcohol in South Africa BMC Medicine, 2018 modelling study ↗
59% of South African drinkers are binge or heavy drinkers SABC News, citing WHO data ↗
18% of alcohol sold in South Africa is illicit or unregulated George Herald, 2024 industry data ↗

Numbers don't fix anything on their own. People showing up for each other does. That's what this is.
